  CHARACTERISTICS:  
  Geographical location:The Mekong Delta is peninsula shaped whose the East, the South and the West boders sea (the seaside is 700 km long), the West borders Cambodia and the North borders Southern East. It is Vietnam’s largest economic region at present. Mekong Delta lies on a fairly flat terrain, where net of rivers and canels are arranged densely. It makes water-ways the most advantageous compared to many other regions in the country.
The natural area is about 39.747 km2; 65 per cent of which is used for agriculture and aquaculture.
Population : up to 2002 the population had reached over 16.755 million people, in which 51 per cent is female, rate of people live in urban area is 18.17 per cent. Population in labor age that has regular work is 8,652,094 people, in which sector I accounts 63.8 per cent, sector II 11.5 per cent and sector III 24.7 per cent. (according to labor and job statistics-Ministry of Labor, Invalid and Social Affairs).
Up to 2003, the Mekong Delta has 13 administrative units including one city which directly under the central Government (Can tho city) and 12 provinces (Long An, Dong Thap, An Giang, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau).
 
 
  SOME ECONOMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:  
  In recent years, the Mekong Delta’s economy has developed steadily prosperously steps, economic structure diversifies in positive trend (it decreases regularly rate of sector I and increases rate of sector II and III). People’s living standard improves continously. Here are some achievements in the year 2002:
Total GDP reached 89,181.3 million dong, in which sector I accounts for 50.92 per cent, sector II 19.92 per cent and sector III 29.16 per cent.
Economic growth of the year 2002 reached 10.4 per cent, average income got 356.6 USD. Rice production reached over 17.7 million tonnes, fruit yield got about 2.5 million tonnes. Total aquaculture production reached 1,353,512 tonnes, industrial production output got 47,365,837 million dong, increased 21.1 per cent compared to the year 2001. The area’s export turn-over reached 1,665,559 thousands USD. Rate of poverty decreased to 12.4 per cent.
